Ice cream blandwiches

I'm surprised there isn't a big market for ice cream sandwiches that are made out of something other than vanilla ice cream and chocolate biscuit. I know I'd eat fancier flavors.

Baby food idea

One of the baby food books we have suggests one odd possible food for 8-month old babies: cooked parsley. Can you imagine the look on a baby's face after getting a mouthful of parsley? I mean, what the...

Skeptical of "light" foods

With no data whatsoever, I reject the assertion that low-fat or sugar-free versions of foods truly help people lose weight or to be healthier. What I expect is actually effective is one or all of:

  1. Exercising more

  2. Eating different types of foods (cutting out the ice cream instead of switching to low-fat)

  3. Just plain eating less

I suspect that people who lose weight while eating light foods are also doing at least one of the above, and that people who only eat light foods without doing any of the above see little change.

Desalination

I have made a September 16th resolution to stop adding salt to my food. I have a salt problem. Not physiologically, at least not yet. But still. Too much salt. I'm not going to avoid salt, but I'm not going to add it to anything either. Hopefully, my palate will adjust (ideally by New Year's, making a nice reversolution). I'm 10 minutes into my first lunch since my resolution, and I miss it already.

Eat locally?

Only 11% of greenhouse gases from food production are due to transportation, according to a new study. More important than transportation is the quantity and amount of food. Red meat, for instance, is highly-energy intensive. The American style of agriculture could be thought of as a complicated process for converting oil into food, and meat as an highly inefficient way of turning one kind of food into another. Eat less meat and dairy, and both you and the planet will be healthier, no matter where they come from.

Kiwitaly

Italy is the world's top producer of Kiwi fruit, growing some 42% of the world's crop. The Kiwi is native to China, and is the national fruit of that country, even though it isn't even in the top 10 producers.
